Residents ready for the clean up at East Croydon Station
I’m sure none of you reading can have missed the violent disturbances which have covered a swathe of London over the last few days. It has truly been sad and shocking to see people made homeless, buildings and cars set alight and communities ruined by the violence.
But, despite those few young people who are for whatever reason taking out their aggression on our city, the true London community spirit is welling up to clear up the mess and get back to work again.
On Twitter the hashtag #riotcleanup is the highest trending, with a supporting website www.riotcleanup.co.uk set up by some amazing people to form hit squads of willing volunteers to reclaim and clean up the streets (read here for some background on those organising the campaign).
It really does underline how people want to help and support their communities. And it is truly heartening to those of us who have seen our city rocked by such hostility to see such “riotwombles” volunteering to clean up the mess. Do go to help if it’s safe to do so!

why are they cheering the police- they did nothing!
