Last week from the 4th to the 6th July inclusively, students in years 7-9 at Hasmonean Boys and Girls Schools devoted three whole days to volunteering.
Under the guidance of JVN and Hasmonean staff, students took on a range of tasks over the three days.
A group of students lifted the spirits of the residents at SAGE by chatting and singing with them, whilst at the Sam Beckman Day Centre they got involved with cooking and musical activities.
At the Bnei Akiva offices pupils organised the library there, whilst at Save the Children they helped sort through donations of clothes as well as clearing up the outside areas.
Students were totally immersed in their activities at the Jewish Military Museum, where they researched artefacts such as a chocolate box given by Queen Victoria to Jewish Soldiers in the Boer War and a nurse’s coat from the First World War. Curator Roz Currie also helped students record their findings for a mini online exhibition.
This is one of the largest efforts of youth volunteering in the Jewish community with over 400 students and staff giving the gift of time and pledging hundreds of hours of volunteering.
The timing couldn’t be better, as we at JVN are on a mission to clock up as many Jubilee Hours as possible in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee – the idea being that every person pledges an hour of their time this year to a good cause.
Mike Silverstone, JVN’s new Youth Co-ordinator, said: ‘We are very impressed by the students at Hasmonean who carried out their volunteering commitments with gusto and good heart. We would also like to thank all the charities for getting involved with this wonderful initiative.’
